Irmo (Quenya Tengwar: `B6t^; IPA: [ˈirmo]) was the true name of the Vala who was usually named Lórien, which was rightly the place of his dwelling. He is the husband of Estë and the brother of Námo (Mandos) and Nienna. At the bidding of Manwë, he went about creating the Path of Dreams, known to the Elves as the Olorë Mallé. The Path was a spiritual road to Valinor, only accesible through the mind. It was through this path that the Elves and the Men loyal to the Valar traveled in their sleep. The final destination was the Gardens of Lorien.
History
Lórien and Mandos were the Fëanturi, masters of spirits. Lórien the younger was the master of visions and dreams. His gardens in the land of the Valar at Lórien, where he dwelt with Estë the gentle, healer of hurts and weariness, was the fairest place the world and was filled with many Maiar. All those who dwelt in Valinor found rest and refreshment at the fountain of Irmo and Estë.
When the Sun and Moon were originally set in their paths "Varda purposed that the two vessels should journey in Ilmen and ever be aloft". It was largely due to the prayers of Lórien and Estë, "who said that sleep and rest had been banished from the Earth", that Varda changed her council and allowed a time of night.
After the birth of Fëanor, his mother Míriel languished and Manwë delivered her to the care of Irmo.
