The Houses of the Dead, referred to also as the Hallows, were a crypt on the top level of the city of Minas Tirith. It was here that the Stewards of Gondor, and the Kings before them, were buried. It was located on Rath Dínen, the "Silent Street", in an area remote from the Citadel.
When Steward Denethor II turned fully to despair during Mordor's vast siege of Minas Tirith, he took his son Faramir, whom he thought dead, to the Houses, intending to burn both Faramir and himself alive on a pyre.[1]
Portrayal in adaptations
In Peter Jackson's film The Return of the King, the entrance way to the Houses of the Dead is a large wooden door built into a cliff-side. A long hallway beyond has an intersection where three passageways branch off at 90, 180 and 270 degrees from the hallway. Along the walls, alcoves were set, each with a stone tomb, the top of each tomb carved into the likeness of the steward contained within. In the center of the intersection a plain stone slab lay upon which the soldiers prepared a pyre at Denethor's request.
