The house of the Fountain was one of the twelve houses of the Elves in Gondolin, led by Ecthelion. The Elves of the house were said to delight in silver and diamonds, and they carried pale swords of great length. It was also said they commonly went into battle to the sound of flutes.
History[]
It is unknown when the house of the Fountain (along with the eleven other houses of the Gondolindrim) was formed, but by the time of Morgoth's invasion of Gondolin in FA 510, they had become considerable in strength. Following the breach of the city, Turgon, the King of Gondolin, sent the house as a reserve to combat the invaders. They, led by their lord Ecthelion, slew many Orcs and several Balrogs alongside Tuor and the house of the White Wing, culminating in Ecthelion's defeat of Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs. But Turgon, seeing the city was lost, recalled what remained of the houses and mounted a last stand in the Place of the Fountain. Some however escaped through Idril's secret way. It is unknown what happened to the house of the Fountain afterwards; it was likely dissolved.[1]
