Haleth was a Man of Rohan and the first son of Helm Hammerhand, who was the ninth King of Rohan.
Biography[]
Haleth was born sometime around TA 2716, during the last years of the reign of his great-grandfather King Déor, the seventh King of Rohan. He would be the eldest son of Prince Helm Hammerhand and his unnamed wife and would later have a sister, whose name is unknown, and a younger brother named Háma. His father Prince Helm was the son of Crown Prince Gram, the son and heir apparent to the reigning King Déor. When Haleth was a baby in TA 2718 his great-grandfather King Déor, now an old man at 74, died after a tumultuous 19 year reign spent fighting the Dunlendings and was succeeded by Haleth's grandfather, the 50 year old Crown Prince Gram, who became the Eighth King of Rohan. With King Grams ascension, Prince Haleth's father Helm would become the new Crown Prince of Rohan, with Haleth himself becoming second in line to the throne as the grandson of the new monarch.
The reign of Haleth's grandfather King Gram would saw the continuation of hostilities with the Dunlendings that had begun under the reign of King Déor. It is likely that Haleth's father, Crown Prince Helm, would have participated in most of these hostilities. In fact, it is even possible that Prince Haleth himself, having reached manhood in the waning years of his grandfather's reign, would also participate in the wars against the Dunlendings as the King got older and more infirmed. King Gram would died in TA 2741 at the advanced age of 73 after 23 years as king, and Haleth's 50 year old father, Crown Prince Helm, would succeed him as the Ninth King of Rohan. Haleth would by now be first in line to the throne, as son of the new king.
During the reign of King Helm, the King would come into conflict with an arrogant and powerful Dunlending landownder called Freca, who obstinately asked the King for his daughters (Haleth's younger sister) hand in marriage for his son. King Helm, as a man of great might and a violent temper, would not take this impudence kindly and kill Freca with his bare hands in TA 2754. This would lead to another great war when the slain Freca's son and heir Wulf would take a large host of Dunlendings to invade Rohan in TA 2758 to depose King Helm. When the invaders reached Edoras later that year, Crown Prince Haleth was killed defending the doors of the Golden Hall. Sadly, Haleth's younger brother Prince Hama and his father King Helm himself would also die later on in this conflict in TA 2759
With the tragic deaths of King Helm and his sons, the main branch of the House of Eorl would become extinct. Therefore, the crown was claimed by the 33 year old Fréaláf Hildeson, a maternal grandson of King Gram via his daughter Princess Hild (the sister of the late King Helm) who would avenge his uncle and cousins deaths by killing Wulf in single combat. Fréaláf would begin a cadet branch that formed the second line of the Kings of Rohan that would last until the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age[1]
