Háma was a Man of Rohan and the second son of Helm Hammerhand, who was the ninth King of Rohan.
Biography[]
Háma was born around TA 2719, a year after the death of his great-grandfather King Déor, the seventh King of Rohan, during the reign of his grandfather King Gram, the eighth King of Rohan. He was the second son of the King's eldest son Helm and his unnamed wife; he had one unnamed sister and an older brother named Haleth. Háma would spend the first twenty-two years of his life growing up in the court of his grandfather King Gram, who ruled over a time of increasing conflict with the Dunlendings. Gram died in TA 2741, and Helm succeeded him as king. Háma would by now be second in line to the throne, as second son of the new king.
In TA 2758, seventeen years into Helm's reign, the War between Rohan and Dunland broke out as a result of the death of the Dunlending leader Wulf's father Freca TA 2754. During the war, Háma was with his father and loyal band of followers who retreated to the fortress of the Hornburg to continue the war with the Dunlending invaders. Besieged for many months during the cruel Long Winter, Háma and a company of men ventured out to attack the enemy and look for food without permission of the king and were lost in the snow.
With the death of Háma as well as that of his father Helm and brother Haleth by the end of the war in spring TA 2759, there was no one of the original patrilineal line of Eorl to become King of Rohan. Therefore, the crown instead was passed to a second cognatic line starting with Fréaláf Hildeson, a son of King Helm's sister Princess Hild and therefore a maternal grandson of King Gram.[1]
