Grimbold was a Rohan commander from Grimslade. He led the Riders of Rohan during the First Battle of the Fords of Isen along with Elfhelm and Théodred and killed many Orcs. Soon he had to retreat due to the death of Théodred. He distinguished himself during the Second Battle of the Fords of Isen by holding off a large army of Orcs for an extended period of time, then staging a retreat with minimal losses when enemy forces arrived.

Later in the War of the Ring, he commanded the Right-wing of the Rohirrim army sent to aid Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields until he was slain by Orcs.

Biography

Hailing from Westfold, he was one of King Théoden's commanders.

During the time of the War of the Ring, he distinguished himself fighting alongside Elfhelm and Théodred, Théoden's son, in the Battles of the Fords of Isen. In particular, Grimbold managed to save Théodred's body from Saruman's Uruk-hai after he was mortally wounded. Grimbold later assumed command of the Rohirrim of Westfold as Erkenbrand was delayed, sharing it with Elfhelm.

While Elfhelm wanted to abandon the Fords, Grimbold wanted to hold them, partially due to the tradition of Westfold. Grimbold was surrounded but his shield-wall held despite no aid from Erkenbrand and Elfhelm. Grimbold then orchestrated a daring break out. He mounted all the riders for whom he had horses and made a gap on the east side of the wall through which the riders passed. They formed into two groups and attacked the north and south sides simultaneously. In the ensuing confusion, the remaining Rohirrim retreated on foot as quickly as they could in the dark.

Grimbold - LOTRO

As depicted in The Lord of the Rings Online

As a reward for his valour, he was promoted to Third Marshal of the Mark (holding the function though not the title), which was left vacant when Éomer was reinstated to lead the First Éored during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Grimbold fell in that battle slain by Orcs. Afterwards, the memory of his death as with others was lamented in the Mounds of Mundburg; in it he is described as "doughty".[2][3]

  • In The Lord of the Rings Online Grimbold is the Thane of Grimslade and the husband of Hildith, who leads the people in his abscence. Grimbold is first met in his encampment in eastern Heathfells region of the Gap of Rohan, where as second-in-command of Prince Theodred he is concerned with slowing the way of the inevitable advance of the Dunlendings. During the First Battle of the Fords Grimbold fights shoulder-to-shoulder with the player for most of the day. By the end of it the Rohirrim forces are driven to the Fords where Grimbold is too late to save the Prince from a mortal blow by the large Uruk, for which he blames himself. In the aftermath of the second battle of the Fords, Gandalf tasks the player with searching for Grimbold, and after a lengthy search the player eventually finds him defending the grave of the Prince at the Fords of Isen, his only wish to die defending it. Having seen Saruman's army firsthand, Grimbold has lost all hope and believes the days of Rohan to be over until the player rouses him by telling that the King himself had ridden into war. His will renewed, Grimbold finds Erkenbrand and his men and marches towards Hornburg as part of the host led by Gandalf. The player does not see Grimbold again until much later, when the Rohirrim are passing through the Druadan Forest on their way to the Minas Tirith. Grimbold perishes on the fields of Pelennor, mauled to death by a fell beast. He is survived by his wife Hildith and his son Grimwald, who is not yet of age.
