The Green Dragon Inn was a popular inn of Bywater, frequented by Hobbits from Bywater itself and the neighboring settlement of Hobbiton.

History[]

While the precise date of the inn's construction is untold, by TA 2941[1] it was already a popular location, when Bilbo Baggins rendezvoused there with Thorin and Company at the outset of their quest.[2]

In TA 3018, Samwise Gamgee was present at the pub while repeating a story told by his cousin Hal, who believed he had seen a walking tree in the Northfarthing, to which Ted Sandyman laughed in disbelief.[3]

Frodo Baggins regularly visited the inn as did his friends Sam Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. When they returned from their quest in TA 3019, they found the inn ransacked, with its windows broken. It was most likely restored following the Battle of Bywater and liberation of the Shire.[4]

In adaptations[]

Films[]

The inn appears much as it is described in J.R.R. Tolkien's works in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy. In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Merry and Pippin recite The Green Dragon, a song composed in honor of the inn, while at Edoras.

Video games[]

In the 2002 video game The Fellowship of the Ring, the Green Dragon Inn is a playable location, where one can talk with the Head Sheriff about the Wolves that have been entering the Shire and speak with other hobbits to get an idea of the general lifestyle of a Hobbit. Also, this is the place where Bilbo Baggins meets up with Gandalf and the Dwarves.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II includes the 6-player map "The Shire", which features the Green Dragon Inn as a unique inn-type building in the center of the map. Like other inns, the Green Dragon can be captured to recruit allied infantry troops based on the occupying player's faction.

The Green Dragon Inn appears in the Wii and PS3 version of The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, in the playable Shire overworld. It is a major landmark in the Bywater region, the southern part of the overworld map. It is impossible to enter the Inn, but there are barrels just outside that Frodo Gamgee may break for extra health, as well as an apple orchard behind the inn, where trees may be shield-bashed to drop apples that also restore his health.

Merchandise[]

In late 2024, Syzygy Forge released an officially licensed whiskey, The Lord of the Rings™ The Green Dragon Wheated™ Whiskey. This collectible spirit is a smooth, wheated whiskey aged four years, inspired by the legendary inn of the Shire. It features a hand-applied specialty linen label and a hand-dipped wax top, evoking the craftsmanship of Middle-earth.

Weta Workshop released a collectible miniature environment of The Green Dragon Inn in 2012. This detailed model was part of Weta's line of high-quality collectibles inspired by the films, designed to bring iconic locations from Middle-earth to life.
