A tall monument was erected as a great white pillar atop the highest hill of the headland that overlooked the City of the Corsairs in Umbar. The great monument was comprised of white marble surmounted by a crystal globe crowned on top. The globe absorbed the rays of the Sun or the Moon and shone like a bright star that could, in clear weather, be seen far out to sea or even upon the south coasts of Gondor to the north.[1]
History[]
In SA 3261 the Númenórean King Ar-Pharazôn landed at the Haven of Umbar and humbled the might and power of Sauron, scattering his servants.[2] Although Ar-Pharazôn's reign represented the darkest times of Númenor, culminating in disaster, Elendil and his exiled followers remembered the landing with pride; they erected a great white pillar outside the city in memory of the event, commemorating the power of their race, and the humiliation of the Dark Lord.
At the end of the Kin-strife between the factions of Eldacar and Castamir, the sons of the usurper sailed with their followers from Pelargir to the Haven of Umbar in TA 1448, removing the city from Gondor's control.[3] After the Haven of Umbar fell under the domination of Sauron's servants, the memorial of his humiliation was thrown down because it was a symbol of the power of Númenor and the humiliation of Sauron,[1] sometime after the return of the Dark Lord to Mordor in TA 2951.
