The Great beasts, or "great siege beasts", were used by Sauron's armies as beasts of burden in the Siege of Gondor at the end of the Third Age. They were required to pull the colossal battering engine Grond to the gates of Minas Tirith to destroy them, after smaller battering rams failed.[1]

Speculation on origins Edit

In the Years of the Lamps long before the First Age, Melkor's interference in Eru's ordered world caused the appearance of monstrous beasts of "horn and ivory" that fought with other beasts and were forever marred by his evil influence[2]. These creatures are a likely progenitor of 'great beasts', but it is unknown.

Portrayal in adaptations Edit

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy Edit

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King these beasts are depicted as gigantic rhinoceros-like creatures with horns protruding from their heads. The special features of the film's extended edition reveal that they were designed after the extinct Megacerops.
