The Great Armament was the vast military fleet developed from SA 3310-SA 3319 by Ar-Pharazôn, King of Númenor, to cross the Sea, assail the Valar, and wrest immortality from them.
History[]
For a period of nine years, many Númenórean shipwrights and armorers toiled in workshops and drydocks, building ships and forging weapons of war. It included a vast armada of warships, and thousands of heavily armed soldiers. The flagship of the armada was the Alcarondas. Sailing to the Undying Lands, the fleet surrounded Tol Eressëa, landing a vast army which camped on the hill of Túna. However, the Valar called upon Eru himself, and the whole fleet sank into a vast rift created by what became the Change of the World. Meanwhile, on land, Ar-Pharazôn and his army were buried under an avalanche of falling rocks or hills.[1][2]
In later ages, Ar-Pharazôn and his great army were long remembered by the Men of Middle-earth.[3]
