Grór was the younger son of King Dáin I, and younger brother of Frór and Thrór. When Thrór left the Iron Hills to reclaim the Kingdom of Erebor, Grór remained behind, ruling over the majority of Durin's folk even if his brother was King. The murder of Thror resulted in the climatic Battle of Azanulbizar in the year 2799. It is very likely that Gror had learned of the death of his brother, although his age may have been a factor that kept him from participating in the war, as his death was in 2805, five years later.

Grór was the founder of the Dwarven settlements in the Iron Hills and their first lord.

Biography

Grór was born in the Ered Mithrin as the youngest of three sons born to Dáin I. His older brothers were Thrór and Frór. After the death of his father in TA 2589, he and his brother left the Grey Mountains and while Thrór went back to the Lonely Mountain, Grór went further into the east and in TA 2590 he established himself as Lord of the Iron Hills.

Two hundred years later, just before the Battle of Azanulbizar in TA 2799, he thought himself too old to go at age 237, and instead sent his son Náin and grandson Dáin. Grór died shortly after in TA 2805.[1] He was then succeeded as Lord of the Iron Hills by Dáin II, for his son had died in the Battle of Anzanulbizar.

In adaptations

In The Lord of the Rings Online, Grór appears in an extended flashback depicting the Battle of Azanulbizar, in which he fights alongside his son and grandson.
