Glend was the name given to a particularly long sword belonging to Nan,[1] an elm-like[2] Giant "of summer of the South"[2] during the Elder Days. During the Quest for the Silmaril,[3] Tinúviel invoked Glend in her lengthening spell[1] to escape Hírilorn[3] since it was one of the longest things in the world.[4][5]

Etymology[]

Glend is likely a Gnomish name with an unknown meaning. Christopher Tolkien speculated that it is possibly connected to the word glen(n)[6] ("slender;[7] thin, fine")[6] from glendrin ("slender") and glendrinios ("slenderness").[8]
