Gilfanon was a Ñoldorin Elf of Tol Eressëa.

Biography[]

Gilfanon was one of the oldest living Elves of Tol Eressëa.[1] He lived in the House of the Hundred Chimneys in the town of Tavrobel. He knew the Elf Lindo and was present when Lindo hosted the Man Eriol at the Cottage of Lost Play during his time on the island. Gilfanon told Eriol of the history of the Sun and Moon as they spoke together.[2][3]

He was also known for recounting a tale of the exile of Ñoldor and the coming of Men.[4]

Etymology[]

A previous name for this character was Ailios.[4] His current name comes from the Sindarin word Gil, which means star.

Other versions[]

In another account, Gilfanon was instead the name of a Solosimpin Elf of Alqaluntë. When Fëanor led the rebellion of the Gnomes against the Valar, his host marched to Cú nan Eilch in order to take the swan-feather ships of the Solosimpi by force. Thus, Gilfanon, with his sons, threatened and fought the Gnomes that tryied to take his ship. In this altercation, he was thrown into the sea, after uttering a curse.[5]
