The Gelion was a river in the East Beleriand.
Location
The Gelion had two sources which were located in the Hill of Himring, from the Little Gelion, and the Blue Mountains, from the Greater Gelion. It then passed south, dividing Estolad to the west from Thargelion to the east, then was crossed by the old Dwarf-Road at Sarn Athrad. Finally, it passed into Ossiriand where it was fed by the rivers Ascar, Thalos, Legolin, Brilthor, Duilwen, and Adurant, which rose in the Blue Mountains.
Gelion then passed by Taur-im-Duinath and emptied into the Great Sea Belegaer and according to Karen Wynn Fonstad's The Atlas of Middle-earth, it was hundreds of miles in length and longer then the Sirion but not as deep and wide.[1][2][3]
Etymology
Gelion was a Sindarin word.[3]
Behind the scenes
Late in his life, Tolkien apparently decided to change the name "Gelion". The possible replacements he recorded were "Gelduin", "Gevilon", "Gevelon", "Duin Daer", and "Duin Dhaer".[4]
