Gary Russell c. 2013

Gary Russell (born September 18, 1963 in Berkshire, England) is a comic book, adapted novel, and film guide author. He has written short stories and fifteen novels set in the universe of Doctor Who, as well as two reference books on the show, and has directed over thirty Doctor Who audio-dramas. He worked for BBC Wales for a time until 2011.

Upon the making of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Ringsfilm trilogy starting in 1997, Gary Russell traveled to New Zealand and interviewed, after the shooting phase, Jackson and dozens of design personnel - mainly John Howe, Alan Lee, and those of Wētā Workshop - to put together three books cataloging the art direction of the films, with exclusive reveal of concept designs and crew-member commentary. He finished each as the three respective films were released, and then authored a cumulative follow-up, The Art of The Lord of the Rings.

In 2007 Russell wrote an official guide to Saul Zaentz and Kevin Wallace' The Lord of the Rings theater production, with photos and interviews of many involved.
