Father Francis Xavier Morgan (1857 - 1935) was a Roman Catholic priest, and became the guardian of Hilary and J.R.R. Tolkien after their mother's death in 1904. Morgan raised the boys at the Birmingham Oratory, in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham.
After Tolkien made the acquaintance of Edith Bratt, Morgan forbade the boy from having any contact with her until his 21st birthday, as he believed the girl to be a distraction to Tolkien's studies. Despite his attraction to Edith, Tolkien wholly obeyed this restriction.
Tolkien would later name his first son, John Francis Reuel Tolkien, after Morgan.
Portrayal in film
Morgan is portrayed by Irish actor Colm Meaney in the 2019 biographical film Tolkien.
