"I don't know if the Road has ever been measured in miles beyond the Forsaken Inn, a day's journey east of Bree."
Aragorn in The Fellowship of the Ring, "A Knife in the Dark"

The Forsaken Inn,[3] formerly known as the Last Inn,[4] was a ruined and abandoned inn constructed by Men that seems to have once acted as an outpost[citation needed] near the eastern border of the Bree-land in Eriador.[1]

History[]

Sometime during the late Second Age or the early Third Age, the Last Inn was constructed around a quarter distance away from Weathertop Hill;[5] being located along[6] "where the East Road approached the old borders of the Bree-land".[1]

The Last Inn was abandoned and ruined not too long before May 3, 2941 as a result of "the growing desolation between Bree and the Grey-flood".[7] During the Quest of Erebor, after a stay at The Prancing Pony in Bree, Thorin II and his Company had planned to rest again at the Last Inn. Upon arriving there "early in the evening" after a little more than a day, they discovered that it was deserted. The Company become depressed at this,[8] but decided to make camp for the night "in its ruins". The Company left the deserted building behind them the following day, crossing into the Lone-lands near the Midgewater Marshes on the left side of the road.[4]

Sometime before the year 3018, the Last Inn became known as the Forsaken Inn. After which, Strider became familiar with the ruins since it was "a day's journey east of Bree".[3]

As of the War of the Ring, the portion of the East-West Road beyond the Forsaken Inn still had yet to be officially "measured in miles" according to Aragorn II.[3]
