The Firienfeld was a wide meadow of green grass, located in the southern Harrowdale valley in Rohan.
The Firienfeld came before the Stair of the Hold, and was below the clifftop refuge of Dunharrow. It served as an encampment and gathering point for the Men of Rohan during times of war.
The road leading to the Hold of Dunharrow ran through tents and pavilions that were raised as shelter for soldiers and their horses.
History[]
The Rohirrim first explored the Firienfeld during the reign of Rohan's second king, Brego. It was used for the first recorded time during the Long Winter of TA 2758-59 in the War between Rohan and Dunland when Edoras was overrun. It was also encamped by the Rohirrim during the War of the Ring.[1]
Etymology[]
Firien represents Old English firgen, "mountain"; -feld, means "field" and Tolkien left it unmodernised; the Firienfield of the Index is in error.[2]
