The Greenway passing through the North Downs, in The Lord of the Rings Online

The Greenway was an ancient road originally meant to connect Arnor with Gondor. But after Arnor was destroyed, it fell into disrepair, and was overgrown with grass, whereby it got its name.

Location[]

Beginning at Fornost Erain in northern Eriador, it crossed the Great East Road at Bree, and then continued south to Tharbad on the Gwathló, where it crossed the river and became known as the Old South Road. From there it led into Dunland, arching slightly towards the Fords of Isen. After it crossed the Isen, it was called the Great West Road, running along the Ered Nimrais through Anórien, then south past Minas Tirith and Osgiliath as the South Road, ending at Pelargir.

Other roads which intersected the Greenway included the King's Highway from Minas Tirith past Osgiliath to Minas Ithil, and at Pelargir the road which eventually ended at Erech, as well as the Harad Road which led into South Harad.

History[]

The Greenway was the long, main path of traffic between Gondor and Arnor, but in the later Third Age after the division of Arnor, it was used less. Its importance ended after the Great Plague and Long Winter when Tharbad was abandoned and its bridge ruined, and most of its length became overgrown, hence its name.

Boromir took this road, crossing Tharbad but losing his horse, on his way to Rivendell. After the close of the War of the Ring, the Reunited Kingdom of King Elessar the road was restored and became usable once more.
