The Lord of the Rings Online - Fenmarch

Fenmarch in The Lord of the Rings Online

Fenmarch or Fenmark was a marshy region of Rohan that stretched from the Firien Wood along the Mering Stream, and therefore marked part of Rohan's eastern border with Gondor.

Etymology[]

The fen element of the name means "marsh" in English, and is a reference to the wetlands along the Mering Stream. March is an old word for "borderland" - a reference to the border with Anórien - and has the same derivation as Mark, a name for the whole country of Rohan.

Fenmarch appears on the map at the beginning of the The Return of the King. However, Tolkien later wrote that he preferred Fenmark, and tried to get the text altered in subsequent editions without success.

In adaptations[]

Peter Jackson's Films[]

As the Rohirrim are being mustered in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, a soldier off-screen announces to Théoden that 300 men from Fenmarch reported to serve.

Video games[]

In The Lord of the Rings Online, on the border of the Fenmarch sits the Rohirrim town of the same name, ruled by Thane Sparhafoc, father of Guthláf.
