Fastitocalon was a likely fictitious creature who was said to be the last of the mighty Turtle-fish of Middle-earth.[1]
Fastitocalon is described in the Hobbit poem of the same name, and not mentioned elsewhere. Fastitocalon was said to have been mistaken many times for an island by many sailors, who were soon drowned when he submerged into the sea.[1]
Etymology[]
In coining the name Fastitocalon in Hobbit-speech (rendered in English), the Hobbit versifier took Astitocalon, an alteration or corruption of the High-Elven Aspido-chelōne (rendered in Greek, meaning 'turtle with a round shield (of hide), and added an F to the beginning in order to "simply to make the name alliterate".[2]
