Fangluin, also known as Bluebeard[1] and the aged, was one of the wicked dwarves of the Nauglath that dwelt in Nogrod, told of in The Book of Lost Tales Part Two.[2]
Biography[]
He was aged, and had counselled his fellow Dwarves to not return King Tinwelint's loan of half the Elves' treasury, suggesting that they may seek Ufedhin by some other good means. When his advice was not taken by Naugladur, he later jeered at the other Dwarves after they returned, having been dishonored by being paid with "a botcher's wage and a draught of wine". He next tried to play "upon their lust", and was soon joined with bitter words from Ufedhin. It was only after this that Naugladur held "a secret council of the Dwarves of Nogrod" to seek how they might get their revenge and satisfy their greed.[2]
Etymology[]
Fangluin is a Gnomish name meaning "Bluebeard",[1] being derived from the elements fang ("(long) beard")[3] and luim ("blue")[4].[5]
Development[]
Fangluin's blue beard may have been recycled into Dwalin's blue beard in The Hobbit.[6]
A part of Fangluin's name was later reused in Fangorn ("Treebeard"),[3] which was used in Fangorn Forest and Treebeard respectively.
