The Falathren language is a dialect of Sindarin, spoken by the Falathrim, the Elves who lived along the shores of Beleriand in the region called the Falas during the First Age.

The Falathrim were part of the Teleri who stayed behind on the western shores of Middle-earth instead of continuing to Valinor. They were befriended by the Maia Ossë and became sea-loving Elves. Their speech descended from Common Telerin, like Sindarin, but developed unique features due to isolation. The Ñoldor, upon returning to Middle-earth, called the language of Beleriand Sindarin, and considered Falathren a dialect of it.

Falathren was "in many ways different" from other Sindarin dialects, but still mutually intelligible. Differences were mostly phonological and lexical, not enough to prevent communication. After the destruction of the Havens of the Falas and later mingling at the Mouths of Sirion, Falathren merged with other dialects, eventually disappearing as a distinct form.

Linguistic differences between Falathren and standard Sindarin:

  • Retention of older sounds: Falathren preserved some archaic Telerin features that other Sindarin dialects lost. For example, initial p- was often retained where standard Sindarin shifted to b-.
  • Less lenition: Consonant softening (lenition) was less extensive in Falathren than in central Sindarin.
  • Vowel shifts: Falathren tended to keep older vowel qualities, making it sound “closer to Telerin.”
