The Ettenmoors, also known as the Troll-fells, were a highland region of Eriador, which was situated west of the Misty Mountains. It was located north of Rivendell and the Coldfells, and was possibly near Mount Gram. The land was wild, and many evil creatures dwelt there. It was also said to be the original home of the trolls Tom, Bert, and William.

History[]

The Ettenmoors had been a peaceful part of the Dúnedain kingdom of Arnor until the middle of the Third Age when, during the war with Angmar, the breakaway kingdom of Rhudaur became a vassal of the Witch-king of Angmar. After the war, the Witch-king fled to the Ettenmoors after his defeat at the Battle of Fornost. At that time the Ettenmoors were mainly ruled by Hill-men and Orcs, and was infested with trolls.[1]

In adaptations[]

In games[]

The Ettenmoors appear in various video game adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, including The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, and The Lord of the Rings Online.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power[]

Gil-galad briefly mentions the Ettenmoors when speaking to Galadriel in the first episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Season Two.

Trivia[]

  • The name Ettenmoors is similar to that of the land of Ettinsmoor from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. This can be attributed to the close friendship between Lewis and Tolkien.
