Ethring was a bridge and possibly a town[1] in the Outlands of Gondor that was built across the river Ringló.

History[]

Ethring was a major crossing point over the river Ringló, and the only recorded bridge in Imlad-Ringló. The South Road that led from Erech in Imlad Morthond to Pelargir ran through Ethring.[2]

During the War of the Ring, Aragorn II crossed the river Ringló at Ethring with his Dead Men of Dunharrow.[3]

Etymology[]

Ethring is a Sindarin name possibly meaning "across cold", likely containing the element ring ("cold, chill")[4] and eth-, a possible mutated form[5] of the prefix ath- ("on both sides, across").[6][7]

In adaptations[]

In the video game The Lord of the Rings Online, Ethring is the only settlement in the Ringló Vale. During the War of the Ring, it is ruled by Lord Borhador, whose seat is in the Crossing-Hall. Due to Borhador's old age, his son Dervorin led the soldiers of the Vale to Minas Tirith in his stead, while his other son Arvaethor stayed behind and assisted in protecting the Vale.
