Ermon and Elmir were two Fathers of Men, the first two men to awake in earlier versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium.

History[]

Against the will of his king , the wise Hisildë Nuin was wandering in Murmenalda when he stumbled upon Ermon and Elmir, who were still sleeping. With the first rise of the Sun in the West, Ermon and Elmir awoke, and were the only two witnesses of the first sunrise. Nuin taught them to speak, and for this reason he gained the nickname Father of Speech.[1] With the help of the Ilkorindi, Men grew in stature and knowledge, but Melko sent his servant Fankil, who managed to alienate most Men against the Elves. Thus, during the War of Palisor between the Elves and the army of Melko, formed by Goblins and Nauglath, only the folk of Ermon remained faithful to the Elves; Elmir's fate is untold. After the war, Men scattered. Ermon and his folk, along with some Ilkorindi led by Tareg, went west, reaching the river Sirion in the northwest of the Great Lands.[1] There they joined forces with the exiled Gnomes, guided by Nólemë, and with them they fought at Gorfalong in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears against Melko and his host of monsters and wicked Men.[1]

From Ermon descended Ing, the king of Leithian.[2]
