Pippin and Ent-Draught

Pippin with an Ent-draught in the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Ent-draughts were the mysterious drafts of the Ents and possibly their primary source of nourishment in Fangorn Forest.

History

Nothing much is known about the contents of these drinks, only that they were made from the river-water and possibly mixed with other things. They also came in two different varieties: one that refreshes and one that nourishes. They were known to have been kept in large stone jars and then ladled out into large bowls. After drinking them, the Ents preferred to lie down so that the drink would not rise immediately to their heads.

The only recorded time an Ent-draught was consumed by someone other than an Ent was when Merry and Pippin were given the liquid by Treebeard during their time in Fangorn Forest. As a result of them drinking the draughts, they grew into the largest hobbits in the history of the Shire, adding at least two to three inches to their overall height,[1] surpassing Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took.[2]

In adaptations

In the extended edition of The Two Towers film, instead of being given the Ent-draught by Treebeard, Pippin finds some himself. After noticing that the effects of the draught has made Pippin taller, Merry drinks some as well, despite Pippin's claim that Treebeard would not want this. The ensuing scuffle results in the duo briefly getting caught by Old Man Willow, who has been moved to Fangorn Forest, rather than the Old Forest where he dwelt in the books. Later in the film, after the last march of the Ents, Merry notices that he and Pippin had shrunk back to their original sizes, suggesting that the effects of the Ent-draught are temporary.
