Belegaer - Atlas of Middle-earth

The archipelago during the First Age.

The Enchanted Isles , or Shadowy Isles, were a chain of islands in the west of Belegaer.[1] The archipelago surrounded part of Aman, east of Valinor and all of Tol Eressëa, set in the Shadowy Seas.[2]

History[]

After the poisoning of the Two Trees and the Revolt of the Ñoldor, the Valar created a series of islands to aid in the Hiding of Valinor. The sea around them was filled with mist and the number of the islands was uncertain and no charted course could go through them. Furthermore, the isles were enchanted; in fact, it was said that anyone who set foot upon these isles would fall into a great sleep until the Change of the World.[3] The only exceptions were Tuor and Idril, who were invited by the Valar, as well as Eärendil and Elwing, who escaped enchantment by the light of the Silmaril and the permission of the Valar.[4][5] At the end of the Second Age, the Enchanted Isles presumably went with Aman and Tol Eressëa after they were removed from the circles of the world.

Other versions of the legendarium[]

In earlier versions of the legendarium, an archipelago, formed by the Magic Isles and the Twilit Isles,[6][7] already "floated" in the Shadowy Seas before the falling of the Two Lamps.[8] They were considered the first of the Outer Lands travelling westwards and when Tol Eressëa was established in front of Aman, the island was surrounded to the West by the Twilit Isles and to the East by the Magic Isles.[9] Furthermore, the most western of the Twilit Isles was Tol Withernon.[10] The islands were also the first place from where a faint light of the Two Trees of Valinor could be seen in the distance and there dwelt some birds from the garden of Yavanna.

Other writings[]

In Roverandom, the homonym protagonist is taken by the great whale Uin through the Shadowy Seas, beyond the Magic Isles. There, from the Bay of Fairyland, he saw the Mountains of Elvenhome and the white glint of a city of Elves on a green hill far away in the distance as well as the light of Faery.
