The One Wiki to Rule Them All

The Empty Lands, also known as the Barren Land[1] and the Empty Land,[1] were a group of lands in Arda that lay far to the East beyond the boundaries of Middle-earth.[2]

History[]

The Empty Lands first came into being to the east of Middle-earth and may have been a collective name for the Burnt Land of the Sun and the Dark Land.[1][3]

The Empty Lands may have been visited by the Númenóreans on their sea voyages into the far east of Arda during the middle of the Second Age since it is mentioned that they journeyed as far as the Gates of Morning in the Burnt Land of the Sun.[2]

Near the end of the Second Age, the Empty Lands,[3] alongside Belegaer, may have been "cast back" during the Changing of the World in order to make room for new lands and seas.[2]

Background[]

The first mention of the concept of the Empty Lands was in J.R.R Tolkien's early drafts[1] and is then only mentioned again in the Changing of the World.[2] It was believed by Christopher Tolkien that the Empty Lands may have been a collective name for the Burnt Land of the Sun and the Dark Land.[1]
