Maedhros searches for Eluréd and Elurín in vain (Eluréd and Elurín shown in the lower right-hand side), by Jenny Dolfen at goldseven.de

Eluréd and Elurín were the twin sons of Dior Eluchîl, son of Beren and Lúthien, and Dior's Elven wife, Nimloth.

Biography

Eluréd and Elurín were both named after their Great-Grandfather Elu Thingol, the King of Doriath. They had a younger sister named Elwing.

The boys Eluréd and Elurín lived with their father in Menegroth, but during the Second Kinslaying by the Sons of Fëanor they were seized by the cruel servants of Celegorm and abandoned in the forest to die. Maedhros, the eldest of the Sons of Fëanor, repented of the deed and sought in vain for them in the surrounding forest with no success.

According to The Silmarillion, these children were never found and were presumed to have perished in the forest. Tradition among the Nandor of Ossiriand held that they were led to the safety of the woodlands by birds and beasts and survived.[1]

Etymology

The name Elurín was a Sindarin word that meant "Remembrance of Elu", which came from the words Elu, which was another name for Thingol, and rîn, meaning "remembrance".

His brother's name, Eluréd, has less clear origins. The latter element réd may have come from the Bëorian word rêd, quite simply meaning "heir", which may have been borrowed into Sindarin. This would give the meaning "Heir of Elu" to his name.
