Eldarion (Quenya: IPA; "Son of the Eldar") was the only son of Aragorn II Elessar and Arwen Undómiel, King and Queen of the Reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth.

Biography

Eldarion was recorded to have several sisters. Of his rule after his father little to nothing is known only that he probably maintained the peace and the borders of the Reunited Kingdom set down by his father, after the War of the Ring.[1]

One of the few known details concerning his time was the rise of a secret Melkor or Sauron worshiping cult.[2]

Etymology

Eldarion is Quenya for "Son of the Eldar": from elda ("high-elf) and -ion (a patronymic ending, "son of, descendant").[3]

Lineage

Through his father, Aragorn II Elessar, he is grandson of Arathorn II and Gilraen, great-grandson of Arador and great-great grandson of Argonui; both from Dúnedain of the North.

Through his mother, Arwen Undómiel, he is the grandson of Lord Elrond and Lady Celebrian, nephew of Elladan and Elrohir of Rivendell, grandnephew of Elros Tar-Minyatur, great-grandson of Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn of Lothlorien, great grandson of Eärendil and Elwing.

According to Tolkien's timelines, Eldarion was born in the year 43 during the Fourth Age. He became King of the Reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor in the year FO 120, after his father Aragorn Elessar died. King Eldarion ruled until his death.

Behind the Scenes

Tolkien had vague plans for a sequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy called The New Shadow, a story set sometime during King Eldarion's reign. However, he abandoned it after about 13 pages. Therefore, it is debatable whether The New Shadow can be considered canon.
