Map of Eastern Territories

Location of the eastern territories

In the realm of Gondor, the eastern territories were those located east of Dagorlad, south of Rhovanion, north of the Ash Mountains, and west of the Sea of Rhûn.[1]

According to The Atlas of Middle-earth, the area totaled about 206,511 square miles and was called the East-lands.[2] However, this name is unofficial because the eastern territories were never given any names by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Description[]

These territories were mainly a plains-land consisting of scattered woodlands and cold winters and warmer summers. It was possibly sparsely populated by the Men of Gondor who spoke Westron.[3]

History[]

Early[]

The eastern territories were once part of Rhûn for thousands of years, and were inhabited by Easterlings and other Men of Darkness. During the late fifth century of the Third Age, in TA 490, the Easterlings invaded Gondor from these lands and were at war with Gondor periodically for about fifty-one years, until King Turambar decisively defeated them in TA 541. After his victory, the King led his armies into these lands; and after about nine years of campaigning there, the eastern territories became provinces of Gondor. By TA 550, the Easterlings were forced to move further east.[4][5]

Middle years and loss[]

The eastern territories remained a part of Gondor for over 1,300 years, and were preemptively defended by Rómendacil II in TA 1248. This ensured peace in the East for six hundred years. These provinces suffered heavily during the Great Plague. The traditionally hostile Easterlings could have threatened the eastern territories, but did not attack; most likely because they were hit hard by the Plague as well.

Two-hundred years later, in TA 1851, the Easterling Wainriders invaded Gondor through the eastern territories. In TA 1856, the King Narmacil lost a key battle that resulted in the eastern territories being completely lost for over a thousand years. After this time, these lands became havens for Easterling invaders, who were frequently stirred up by Sauron.[4][5]

War of the Ring and recovery[]

The Easterlings who allied themselves with Sauron during the Great War of the Ring were defeated, and were gradually pushed back by King Elessar. Gondor claimed all that land, until the Sea of Rhûn; and as a result, the eastern territories once again became part of Gondor and the Reunited Kingdom.[6][7]
