Donato Giancola (born 1967) is an American book and game illustrator, involved extensively in many areas of media. He is among the foremost Tolkien illustrators of his generation.
A great admirer of J.R.R. Tolkien's world, Giancola was involved in Ballantine Books' The Hobbit graphic novel (2001), with illustrator David Wenzel, and in the following decades, two collections of his Middle-earth art were published: Middle-earth: Visions of a Modern Myth (2010) and Middle-earth: Journeys in Myth and Legend (2019). His art was also shown at the international exhibits Images from the Middle Earth (Italy, 2002)[1] and Art of the 'Lord of the Rings' (Rome, Italy, 2004)[2].
As with Jenny Dolfen, Kip Rasmussen, Spiros Gelekas, and others, some of Giancola's pieces are displayed in Tolkien Calendar 2023.
He received the World Fantasy Convention's award for best artist in 2004.[3] He has drawn many cards for Magic: The Gathering. Like Ted Nasmith, he also on occasion depicts subjects from the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.[4]
He won the Tolkien Society award for Best Artwork in 2024 with his painting “Frodo’s Inheritance”.[5]
