The One Wiki to Rule Them All

Demons also known as the "Umaiar", are spirits of old who turned over to the dark side. Apart from Morgoth, who was originally a Vala, most of the demons were corrupted Maiar (such as Sauron and the Balrogs). Corrupted Maiar were referred to by the Quenya word Umaiar.

Balrogs; the most notable demons of the First Age

Demons

  • Morgoth was the first Dark Lord and Primordial God of Darkness; originally the most powerful of the Ainur, created by Eru Iluvatar.
  • Sauron, the eponymous Lord of the Rings, was a fallen Maia, the creator of the One Ring, and the most trusted lieutenant of his master Melkor.
  • Balrogs were Maiar that were seduced and corrupted by Melkor to his service.
  • Ungoliant was a primordial being in the shape of a gigantic spider. All giant spiders who lived through the ages were descended from her.

Trivia

  • Saruman was a maiar spirit clothed in flesh as one of the Istari or wizards. He eventually fell to evil and sought to become the new dark lord. While he did not (perhaps could not) shed his human form for a greater demonic one like the Balrogs, he could be considered an umaiar as he was corrupted and perpetrated many evil acts before he was defeated/undone.
  • While there were many spirits corrupted and wrapped in monstrous forms, Umaiar specifically refers to the race of lesser spirits, maia, that existed before Arda and then later were corrupted to evil.
