Defending Middle-earth: Tolkien: Myth and Modernity, by Patrick Curry, studies ecology and spirituality in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and responds to the largely negative response of critics to Tolkien's work. Published in 1997, it was the first major work of secondary literature to address these matters. A second edition was released by Houghton Mifflin, in 2004.
- "Curry sees deeply into the spiritual heart of Tolkien's world, and explains it in clear and unaffected language."
- —Tom Shippey
