The Dawnless Day, also known as the Storm of Mordor[1] and Darkness Unescapable,[2] refers to the period of darkness that covered Gondor[3] and parts of Rohan,[4] blocking out the Sun during the Siege of Gondor.

History[]

The Dawnless Day started on March 10, 3019[5] from black fumes sent out from Mordor, no doubt from Mount Doom.[citation needed] It veiled the Sun in an attempt by Sauron to discourage or misguide his enemies. The veil of Darkness blacked out most of Gondor[3] and Rohan,[4] though some beams of light from above did breach its surface.[citation needed]

Along with the Darkness Unescapable, a host from Minas Morgul set forth toward Minas Tirith, as witnessed by Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee and Gollum when they passed the Cross-roads of the Fallen King.[6] Later Orcs from the Morannon took Cair Andros and passed into Anórien.[5]

The Dawnless Day was also observed by the Rohirrim who were mustering their Riders and rode forth from Harrowdale.[4]

On that same day, Faramir was rescued by Gandalf and Imrahil outside Minas Tirith's Great Gate and Aragorn led the Dead Men of Dunharrow and the Grey Company, across the river Ringló.[5]

The Darkness Unescapable was eventually finally blown away by a strong wind from the south-west on the morning of March 15[7] near the end of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields when Aragorn and his companions arrived in time to join the battle.[8] The end of the Dawnless Day signified a new hope for the Free Peoples of the World.[9]
