David Thorn Wenzel (born November 22, 1950[1]) is an American fantasy illustrator, known for his involvement in Lin Carter's Middle Earth: The World of Tolkien Illustrated (1977) and with The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition (1990, 2001), and for his own book Kingdom of the Dwarfs, which creates and explores a detailed Dwarven world in the "tradition" of J.R.R. Tolkien's Dwarves.
The forerunner to The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition was a graphic novel of The Hobbit that Wenzel had illustrated, published by Eclipse Comics in 1989. The comic writer Chuck Dixon was involved in both. Collectively, these are the only authorized graphic novel adaptations of The Hobbit.[2]
Wenzel has worked for Marvel Comics and D.C. Comics, and has illustrated many children's tales.
He resides in Connecticut, USA.[3]
