Daruin was a Man of Brethil during the First Age, son of Darlas.
Biography[]
Daruin was once a man under Manthor's authority, who was a lord of the Haladin. When Manthor's company came across Húrin Thalion near Haudh-en-Elleth, after the death of Morwen, Daruin broke Manthor's command by running ahead to the house of Hardang the Chieftan, without leave, to tell Hardang of Manthor's bringing Húrin to him.
Hardang later made Daruin a Captain of Brethil during the time of Húrin's imprisonment there. When a battle broke out after the 301st Folkmoot for Judgement, at which Húrin was put to trial for his wrongdoings against Hardang, Manthor and Daruin were enemies. In the end, Daruin wounded Manthor with an arrow, and managed to escape. After Húrin's departure from Brethil, Manthor died.
Etymology[]
Daruin was a name in the Halethian language, possessing the element dar ("mastery, lordship").[1]
Other versions[]
In early versions of the account, Avranc's was called Farang and Faranc.[citation needed]
In a note to the text, Christopher Tolkien mentioned that Tolkien planned on changing the name Avranc to Daruin as a further language development.[1]
