Dagnir is a Dragon enemy created by Fantasy Flight Games for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. She is encountered in The Fire in the Night and Mount Gundabad adventure packs.
Biography[]
Dagnir is a wingless Fire-drake whose domain is the ruined Dwarven mines of Mount Gundabad. After the player defeats a Fire Drake in The King's Quest scenario (The Wilds of Rhovanion Expansion), the dying dragon curses the heroes by telling them his mother will avenge him by destroying them and all the lands of the Wilderland. The player's heroes search the Withered Heath in hopes of destroying the mother before the news of her offspring's death reached her. The heroes managed to kill a deadly Cold-drake, hoping it to be the mother, only to realize it was smaller than the Fire-Drake they killed earlier. Shortly after the heroes encounter a goblin named Urdug who knows about the whereabouts of Dagnir. Urdug tells that Dagnir had made her new home at Mount Gundabad and that the Goblins have either scattered or become servants to their new overlord.
Urdug tells the heroes of a key that can be used to open a secret door to Gundabad, which could allow the heroes to sneak in and catch the dragon by surprise. After retrieving the key from a Giant the heroes head for the Woodmen Settlement of Hrogar's Hill for resupply. Not too long after the heroes arrive at the settlement, is when Dagnir unleashes her fury on the wooden fort. The heroes and the Woodmen manage to drive off the dragon, but at a heavy cost of lives and timber. The heroes are force to leave the settlement as they are blamed for causing the dragon to attack. The Master of the Settlement does however, gives the heroes some information about Fram's blade, Wormsbane, and how it could be strong enough to pierce the hard scales of Dagnir.
After fighting Fram's Shade at Framsburg, the heroes manage to obtain Wormsbane, but only to find it broken in half. One of the heroes tells about how Durin I's first house at Gundabad had the first forge of the dwarves that could be powerful enough to reforge the enchanted blade. After infiltrating the dragon's lair and reforging the blade, the heroes have their final show down with the beast. After plunging the blade into the belly of Dagnir, the dragon lets out a roar of pain and thrashes around causing the dragon to fall into a deep chasm. With the death of Dagnir the heroes and the Wilderland could catch a breath, but only for a moment as Urdug had rally the Goblins of Gundabad to besiege the stronghold and kill the heroes; and then unleash their havoc on all of Rhovanion.
Dagnir's armored scales are so strong that most weapons can hardly make a scratch it them. Her teeth and claws are deadly to any warrior who gets too close to her. Her massive size is enough to crush buildings and people as if they where made of straw. But her most dangerous weapon is the fire breath that can reduce people and buildings to ash in a matter of seconds.
Strategy[]
Dagnir's biggest threat to the players is her attack strength and special card abilities. She gains strength with more quest/side-quests in the victory display. There are also two Encounter cards that can buff Dagnir.
