This page concerns the real world.

"Cirion and Eorl and the Friendship of Gondor and Rohan" is the second chapter of Part Three of Unfinished Tales.

Summary

This chapter describes the origin of the Éothéod, and of how they became allies to Gondor in the Third Age. The Éothéod aided Calimehtar and later his son Ondoher against the attacks of the Wainriders, until the Battle of the Camp and the end of the Kings of Gondor.

Some centuries afterwards, Cirion, Steward of Gondor, sought aid from Eorl, Lord of the Éothéod, in fear from the threat of Balchoth and Orcs together. Eorl granted the request, and helped defeat the enemy in the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. To thank Eorl, Cirion met him at the Tomb of Elendil upon the hill of Halifirien and swore an oath that gave Calenardhon to Eorl's people as their own. Calenardhon would afterwards become Rohan, and its people the Rohirrim.
