"Chip the glasses and crack the plates!" is the opening line of a humorous[1] song sung by Thorin and Company after eating at Bilbo Baggins' house.[2]

History[]
The original version of this song was sung by Thorin Oakenshield's company of Dwarves, in jest, when cleaning up for Bilbo after supper on the night they arrived at Bag End. Thorin was busy talking to Gandalf, so he did not participate the song. It was intended as a jest, and they did not do any of those things, of course.[2]
In other versions[]
In the second version of The Hobbit, the poem was textually close to the final version, but may or may not[1] have had some rough drafting in the lost pages of the first version.[3]

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey[]
In the first film of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, the song is sung after dinner by the Company, before Thorin II Oakenshield arrives late. It is referred to here as Blunt the Knives.
Blunt the knives, bend the forks
Smash the bottles and burn the corks
Chip the glasses and crack the plates
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
Cut the cloth, tread on the fat
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat
Pour the milk on the pantry floor
