The Celebrant flowing through Lothlórien, as seen in The Lord of the Rings Online

The Celebrant, also known as Silverlode and Kibil-nâla, was a stream rising in the eastern Misty Mountains near the exit from Moria. The Celebrant ran through the vale of Azanulbizar east to Lothlórien where it was met by the Nimrodel river, and emptied into the Anduin. The stream ran for about eighty-five miles, according to The Atlas of Middle-earth.[1]

History[]

The Fellowship of the Ring followed this river when they travelled from Moria to Lórien. It formed the northern boundary of the Field of Celebrant.

Etymology[]

Celebrant is a name in Sindarin meaning "silver course".[2] It consisted of the elements celeb ("silver")[3] and rant ("course, water-channel")[4].

Silverlode was a name in Westron. It contained the element lode ("course, water-channel").[5]

Kibil-nâla was a name in Khuzdûl meaning "silver-channel"[2] or "silver-course". It consisted of the elements kibil ("silver") and nâla ("path, course, river-course, or bed").[6]

In other versions[]

In earlier versions, the Khuzdûl name was Zigilnâd.[6]
