Captain of the Haven was the title of some high person[1] or perhaps the ruler[2] of Umbar[1] in TA 2980.[3]

History[]

The Captain of the Haven may have been a title originating as far back as TA 1448 when the sons of Castamir created the Corsairs of Umbar and first gained control of Umbar.[2]

During the stewardship of Ecthelion II of Gondor between the years 2957 and 2980,[4] a great captain whom the Gondorians called Thorongil came to Gondor from Rohan and counseled Ecthelion, suggesting to him that the rebels in Umbar were a threat to the Outlands that may possibly be exploited by Sauron, should he ever decide to make war upon Gondor. Eventually, in the year 2980, Ecthelion gave leave to Thorongil to assemble a small fleet to defeat them. During the night, when Thorongil and his small company arrived at Umbar, they burned many of the ships belonging to the unprepared Corsairs. During the battle upon the quays, the Captain of the Haven was overthrown by Thorongil himself. With little loss, Thorongil and his small fleet left Umbar, and returned to Gondor through the city of Pelargir.[5] Another Captain of the Haven may have possibly been appointed after the attack.[2]

In other versions[]

In an early draft of Ecthelion's entry in Appendix B, the Captain of the Haven does not appear, and it is only mentioned that "Aragorn of the North serves as a soldier in his forces",[6] which was "the first mention of Aragorn's years of service" to Gondor and Rohan.[7] The Captain of the Haven first appeared in the series of typescript pages alongside the first appearance of the name Thorongil.[8]

In adaptations[]

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game[]

In The Hunt for the Dreadnaught pack of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, there is an enemy card labeled "Captain of the Haven".

The Lord of the Rings Online[]

In Corsairs of Umbar expansion to The Lord of the Rings Online, a painting of the spear wielded by the Captain of the Haven forty years before can be seen framed in The Bloody Eagle Tavern.[9] The proprietor of the tavern, Akálam, is the son of the old Captain of the Haven.[10] When Eshmun, the current Captain of the Haven,[11] takes the player to The Bloody Eagle, the player is able to examine the spear of the older Captain.[12] Upon doing so, Akálam tells the two of them the tale of the bane of Umbar who killed the old Captain. He also claims that he supposedly mortally wounded Thorongil, but has no evidence to prove this feat.[13]
