- "The Wargs came ravening and down came the bodyguard of Bolg, goblins of huge size with scimitars of steel."
- —The Hobbit, Chapter XVII: "The Clouds Burst"
The bodyguard of Bolg, son of Azog, consisted of giant Orcs of Moria.
History[]
In the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin Oakenshield attacked them and while driving off the Wargs in that area, could not break through the bodyguards, and was fatally wounded in the process. When Beorn arrived, he scattered them and "crushed" Bolg, after whose death few, if any, survived the remnant of the battle and its aftermath.[1]
Their exact breed is unknown.
Portrayal in adaptions[]
Peter Jackson's movie trilogy[]
Bolg's bodyguards unofficially appeared in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as Orc Berserkers that originated from Mount Gundabad. Some of these Orcs are slain by Dwalin when they attempt to kill Bilbo on Ravenhill, though the hobbit manages to kill several by throwing stones at them before Bolg knocks him unconscious. Many more of these Orcs were eventually slain through the combined efforts of Thorin and Legolas.
Video games[]
Bolg's bodyguards appeared in The Hobbit (2003 video game) at the level of Dreamworld.
