The black serpent was the emblem depicted on the banner of a chieftain of the Haradrim during the War of the Ring. It depicted a scarlet field with a black serpent.[1]
History[]
The symbol is mentioned only once in The Lord of the Rings. On Théoden's arrival at the Pelennor Fields with his army of Rohirrim horsemen, a Haradrim chieftain bearing a banner with this emblem beheld him, and prepared with his own horsemen to stand against Théoden's charge. He and his Haradrim were clove through, however, "like a fire bolt in the forest" by the Rohirrim, and other Haradrim fled. After defeating the chieftain, Théoden hewed the bearer of the black serpent banner.[1][2]
