Barbara Remington (June 23, 1929 - January 23, 2020) was an American illustrator that made the cover art for Ballantine Books' releases of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, and The Hobbit.
These publications preceded the considerable rise in popularity of Tolkien's work. Unfortunately, Remington was not given ample time by Ballantine to read Tolkien's books before her cover art was expected, as she would explain to Tolkien by letter in 1967.[1]
She once drew a map of Middle-earth and lands to the south, published by Ballantine in 1965 with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.[2]
She illustrated few or no published literature after 1968.[3]
