This article is about the son of Arador. For the other namesakes, see Arathorn (disambiguation). |
Arathorn II was the fifteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain and father of the future Heir of Isildur, Aragorn II Elessar.
Biography[]
Like his forefathers, he was raised by Elrond in Rivendell while his father Arador dwelt in the wild. Arathorn asked for the hand of Gilraen at a very young age. Though her father Dírhael initially opposed the marriage, his wife prevailed upon him to agree to the match, as she foresaw that an early death awaited Arathorn.
Arathorn became the Chieftain of the Dúnedain in TA 2930, when his father was captured by Hill-trolls. He ruled for only three years until TA 2933,[1] when he was slain by an arrow that pierced his eye while hunting Orcs with Elladan and Elrohir. He was followed by his infant son Aragorn, later known as Elessar Telcontar of the Reunited Kingdom.
In adaptations[]
Born of Hope[]
In the fan work Born of Hope, Arathorn II is played by actor Christopher Dane. One of the few differences between the book and the film is that in the film, Arathorn is shot in the chest with an arrow, and then is stabbed in the eye with another; compared to the book, where he is shot in the eye.
Etymology[]
Arathorn is a Sindarin name that meant either "Eagle-king" or "Steadfast king."[citation needed]
