Sir Antony Sher (June 14, 1949 – December 2, 2021) was a veteran British actor who played Thráin II, father of Thorin II Oakenshield, in the extended edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
In the early 1970's, Sher belonged to a small group of "anarchist" actors and writers working at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, which also included Bernard Hill.
A prolific actor on both stage and screen, Sher's notable stage performances include the title character in the Royal Shakespeare Company's touring production of MacBeth, co-starring his "son", Richard Armitage as Angus and Sir Christopher Lee's niece, Dame Harriet Walter, as Lady MacBeth. Among his his most notable stage performances was the lead role of Willy Loman for the RSC's revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, again co-starring Walter.
