Amon Angren[1] was a location of mines in Mordor that created a large amount of Sauron's war materiel.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
The location is non-canonical, as it does not appear in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and originated on a merchandising map created by New Line Cinema cartographer, Daniel Reeve,[1] for numerous officially licensed Middle-earth products, such as 2003's The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King Edition Chess Set by Hasbro Games/Parker Brothers, where the map is featured on the reverse of the chess board, The Return of the King Visual Companion and many other books and toys in a variety of languages.
The 2003 map is itself a revised version of Daniel's map included with Decipher Inc's 2002 authorized Maps of Middle-earth supplement for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game, however, while the Decipher map only included names from J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium, the revised 2003 merchandising map has had numerous non-canonical locales added; some original and some originating from official Middle-earth Role Playing material.
The locale was later mentioned, albeit misspelled, in promotional material for the game Middle-earth: Shadow of War. A label, "Tamon Angren", was located on the promotional map for Shadow of War in the exact same location as Amon Angren, presumably named so due to difficulty in reading Daniel Reeve's calligraphy on the original New Line Cinema authorized map.
