Alex Funke, describing the filming of scenes at Helm's Deep

Alex Funke was Miniatures Director of Photography for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, in which a considerable variety of miniatures were needed in general set-making and for scenes involving characters separated by forced perspective. He worked closely with Mary MacLachlan and others.

Like many crew members of The Lord of the Rings films, he also worked with Peter Jackson on King Kong (2005). Before the 2000s, Funke had worked in photography direction or with miniatures on Starship Troopers (1997), Waterworld (1995), and Total Recall (1990).

Funke was Motion Control Supervisor for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013). He was Miniatures Director of Photography once again, through Wētā Workshop, for Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
